Students in Mrs. Reuyan's Geometry class are learning about lines and angles and how they are actually all around us in our every day life! The students have been tasked with a new job- they are partners in an engineering firm and they have to work with their teammates to find a solution to a problem. They must find a structure that uses lines and angles that needs fixing, and make recommendations to City Council to fix it! Today the students began brainstorming, and they had some very thoughtful and meaningful conversations! I am excited to see their final product and design!

Students in Mrs. Bowles' class entered the room and discovered there had been a crime committed in our school library. Students were assigned jobs and had to investigate the scene using their science process skills and science safety skills. Students realized that the powders found at the various crime scenes may have contributed to the crime. Once students started analyzing the different powders, they were able to understand the physical properties of matter and how items can be classified using density!
Students in Mrs. Harrell's Civics class discussed the differences of order and chaos by first examining a piece of artwork by Kandinsky. From there, they discussed the characteristics of what is order and what is chaos, then came up with examples of each. Once they reached a consensus, students were able to apply that to our government. How does our government create order from chaos and how does our government create chaos? Ask your students to find out our findings!
Our gifted 8th graders who are zoned for Kempsville High School got to experience the life of a 9th grade Kempsville Chief! Students got to attend classes with current 9th and 10th graders, and even eat lunch with them in the cafeteria. The best part was seeing some of our former 8th grade Braves who were excited to welcome the newest Chiefs! What a fun experience for everyone!
We were finally able to have our gifted lunches again! It was so great to see our students back in my room, spending time with their peers. Today, the students had some pretty competitive games of Apples to Apples.
Mrs. Marzitello, the Gifted Resource Teacher at Kempsville High School, came to speak to our gifted 8th grade students that are zoned for KHS. What an exciting treat! Mrs. Marzitello was able to tell us all about high school life at KHS! She informed us about the academic and social aspects of high school, including club and sports. We will also be hosting a follow up field trip to the high school later this month where students will be able to shadow a KHS student for the day. Please be sure to check the Weebly and have your student listen to the morning announcements to pick up field trip info.
Students in Mr. McDowell's Earth Science class have been studying weather and climate change. To conclude the unit, students did thorough and thoughtful research to formulate their opinions on climate change. Students participated in a Socratic Seminar to discuss their beliefs on climate change and if it is naturally occurring or man made or both. Students had wonderful contributions and great insights about this topic.
Students in Mrs. Bowles' Physical Science class learned about the Law of Conservation of Mass in a different way today. Instead of listening to Mrs. Bowles lecture all about this topic, students assumed the role of a scientist trying to prove the law. Students were presented with a problem, many different materials, then they had to come up with their own experiment. Next class, students will be arguing the law and whether or not their experiment demonstrated the Law of Conservation of Mass. Stay tuned for more photos and updates!
Students in Mr. Wnukowski's Civics class are exploring American Politics as a Problem Based Unit. Each day, students have been understanding perspectives through the eyes of a different stakeholder important in the election process. We have been tying all these perspectives to the grand theme of 8th grade which is Order and Chaos. Students are analyzing the process of voting, political parties, interest groups, etc. and deciding what parts are chaotic and which are orderly. The culminating project will be for students to review all the perspectives and create a reform they find chaotic. We are looking forward to seeing their final products!
Students in Mr. Wnukowski's Civics class examined the main theme for the year this past week. Order vs. Chaos. Students observed a painting by Kandinsky that depicts both order and chaos. Once students saw the painting, they had to establish terms that related to order and other words that related to chaos (they had some great examples- sloppy joes, their little brother's room and their lockers were chaotic while fish sticks, laws, and judges are orderly. Once students organized their terms, they had to relate how our government can be both chaotic and orderly at the same time. Students cited thoughtful examples of how the government tries to bring order to chaos and vice versa.
