GIFTED TESTING:
If you would like your student tested for gifted services, our first testing date for the year is still in limbo. As soon as I get word about testing, I will let you all know. Feel free to email me and let me know if you wish to have your student tested.

The gifted resource teacher facilitates the testing of potentially gifted students in conjunction with the Gifted Testing Department, located at the Plaza Annex building.
Anyone can nominate students to be tested for the gifted program, including parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and the students themselves.
When a student is identified for testing, the gifted resource teacher distributes the forms and communicates with the student and parents about the testing process. Parent forms need to be returned at least two weeks prior to the test date.
What are the steps in the gifted referral process
- A letter is sent home notifying parents along with a Parent Information Form
- A teacher completes the Teacher Recommendation Form
- All forms and pertinent records are sent to GRT
- GRT notifies parents and students of testing date and time
- Placement committee reviews all information and makes decision
- Parents receive notification by mail
- Confidentiality is maintained during all steps in the process.
Testing is conducted at KMS two times per year. The test dates for the 2018-2019 school year are as follows:
First Semester – January 3, 2020 (Testing of any students who wish to test for gifted identification and to apply to Old Donation School.)
Second Semester– May 12, 2020 (Testing for gifted identification)
Parents and students are notified of the test results by mail. Should you have any questions regarding your student’s test results, please contact KMS Gifted Resource Teacher, Mrs. Yeager, for information. 648-4700.
Additional Programs for Gifted Students in Virginia Beach Middle and High Schools:
Gifted students at the middle school level may choose to apply to the full-time gifted program at Brickell Academy, to a pull-out program for dance and/or visual arts, or to remain in their neighborhood school and receive services via the resource-cluster program.
Brickell Academy for Advanced Academics and Arts
Brickell Academy is a full-time school for academically gifted students in grades six through eight. The school aims to provide a safe, nurturing environment in which open communication and a challenging, differentiated curriculum will prepare gifted students to be lifelong learners committed to excellence. Students must apply to Brickell Academy and meet the criteria for gifted identification in VBCPS in order to attend.
Gifted Dance Education Program
The Gifted Dance Education Program is a pull-out model for identified students in grades three through eight and is housed at Brickell Academy. Admission into the program is determined through an application process. Dance students are presented a comprehensive curriculum which emphasizes the areas of concepts and skill development, dance history and appreciation and creativity.
Gifted Visual Arts Program
All sixth through eighth grade students identified as gifted in visual arts and wish to participate in the Gifted Visual Arts Program attend Virginia Beach Middle School as a full-time student. In grades six through eight, the Gifted Visual Arts Program is embedded within the middle school daily schedule. Gifted Visual Arts Program student schedules incorporate a zero bell to provide time for visual arts and another elective during the course of the student’s middle school day. Sixth and seventh graders have health and physical education scheduled during the zero bell; eighth graders have art studio. Transportation to Virginia Beach Middle School is provided for all students attending the Gifted Visual Arts Program.
Academy and Advanced Academic Programs
The Academy and Advanced Academic Programs represent an exciting expansion of curricular options for all students across the city. Recognizing that no educational program should adopt a “one size fits all” philosophy, the division developed these programs to provide additional academic choices for our students.
