You can still check back here for important announcements and updates! I will continue to send out emails for new information! We had to cancel our lunch last week since school was closed for our "Flo-cation".I am so pleased we had such a huge turnout for our first 6th grade lunch! We got the chance to meet, complete a survey, and the students played games! I am already excited for our next lunch! Welcome to middle school! I am so excited to meet each and every one of you! I can't wait to work with you all this year. Please be sure to stop by my room (room 130) to meet me and I can answer any questions you may have!
Students in Ms. Johnson's Social Studies class have been learning about the Articles of Confederation and the steps that lead the US to write the constitution. Students assumed a role as a member of society- a Northern manufacturer, a southern plantation owner of slaves, a free African American, an elite member of society, an educated young white woman, and a Native American Chief. Students researched these members of society to see how their opinions differed with forming our Constitution. Once they completed their research, they analyzed their member and completed a Paul's Reasoning organizer. Students were then able to participate in our own mini Constitutional Convention (Philosophical Chairs) and speak the viewpoints of their member of society. This activity was a little difficult, as students had to infer the viewpoints of the members.
Students in Mr. Bowles class took on the perspective of a character in The View from Saturday. Students examined the characters and answered questions as that character would while participating in Philosophical Chairs. It was an eye opening experience to try to think like another character! The students did an extraordinary job!
Students in Mr. Butler's science class examined their mindsets today. We learned that many famous people have struggled in life and they were able to overcome their obstacles using a growth mindset and powerful thinking. Students realized that mistakes are good- they help us learn! They even did a sort and had to categorize items like potato chips, popsicles, chocolate chip cookies, post-it notes, and many other items. Turns out all these items have one thing in common- they were all made by mistake! I am not sure how my life would be without chocolate chip cookies! Hopefully our students remember that they too can be successful despite struggles that may come their way!
Our first gifted lunch was a huge success! Students were excited to meet new friends and catch up with old friends from elementary school. Students were able to fill out a survey- "10 things about me" so I can get to know them a little better! After the survey, students played games and chatted with their friends. It was a wonderful afternoon together!
Students in Mrs. Garcia's English class are reading a novel on surviving middle school. One chapter, "The Social Scene" is a how-to chapter. Students learn how to be popular, how to survive having your siblings at school with you, how to stop a rumor in it's tracks, how to remake your rep, and many others! Students participated in an interest inventory, then it was up to them to determine what they wanted to do to teach the class about their how to section. Some students created a sock puppet show, others did a skit, while others created how to booklets and posters!
