We had such a remarkable turn out for our gifted lunches yesterday! I thoroughly enjoy seeing our students come together and have a little fun! I plan on hosting lunches at least twice a month this year (or more!). I love getting to see students outside the walls of the classroom.

Students in Mr. Woods' Advanced Life Science classes were able to learn about Dichotomous Keys and classification by playing the name game. Students were given a name on their back. The name was that of a famous person. Students had to use their knowledge of questioning to determine who was on their back. Not only was this a great game to get our students up and moving, but it allowed students to understand the concept of classification and questioning.
In addition to the name game, students self assessed their knowledge of dichotomous keys and participated in differentiated activities on classification and dichotomous keys. It's been too long! We finally are having gifted lunches! I have missed having our students come to my class to eat lunch with me and interact with other gifted students. We had fun today playing Chess, Jenga, and Apples to Apples! Our next lunch will be in 2 weeks!
Students in Mrs. Claffy's class had a lesson on Bloom's Taxonomy today. Students learned the different levels of questioning, then used the fairy tale, Cinderella to generate questions using what they learned. Once they had a good grasp on the concept, students were able to apply their knowledge to another fairy tale or they could read articles about solar powered cars or holiday windows at stores at Macy's. Students will be using their knowledge of Blooms' Taxonomy later this week when we begin A Christmas Carol.
Students in Mr. Pernites' Science classes got to help solve a medical mystery by conducting research based off symptoms the victim was experiencing prior to getting ill. Students used medical websites to explore symptoms and their illnesses and made hypotheses based off their findings. They finally concluded that the victim was poisoned by drinking too much water too quickly! Be sure to ask your student how cell processes play a huge role in this!
Students in Ms. Claffy's English classes were able to learn from our mistakes today. Students had to observe a piece of paper with a challenging fold, and were tasked with trying to recreate it. While students were trying to recreate it, we listened to terms students were saying while they did it. I was excited to hear many students encourage one another, and cheer each other on. Once the challenge was over, students discussed their mindsets and how they think. We discussed how we can grow from our mistakes and learned about many items we use every day that were invented "by mistake"- the chocolate chip cookie, potato chips, microwaves, penicillin and the pacemaker were all created by mistake! Sometimes mistakes are worth making! We concluded the lesson with a quick discussion on growth vs fixed mindsets and ended with the iceberg analogy and goal writing.
Our first 7th grade lunch of the year was fantastic! It was so great to see the students again! They certainly picked up where they left off last year! Many played Jenga and Apples to Apples! I always enjoy seeing our students during lunches! I can't wait until our next one!
Welcome back! I am so excited to see you all again this year! I know you are going to have a wonderful 7th grade school year! I can't wait to see you all in classes, or during our gifted lunches! I've changed classrooms! Stop by and see me in room 130!
How do you keep a bunch of 7th grade young men entertained during lunch? Break out the Rubik's Cubes. These fellas have every Rubik's Cube ever created. Better yet, they can solve all of them! Be prepared to be impressed if you watch them work on one of these cubes!
