6th grade students had an exciting (and competitive) time today during our gifted lunches. Some students played Apples to Apples, others played Jenga, Battleship, and Chess! We had such a wonderful turn out today. Gifted lunches are one of my favorite times of my day! We will have another gifted lunch soon!

We finally got to have our gifted lunches! I am so happy to see all our students back in my room. They had such a great time today bonding with their classmates. Some played Jenga, and others played Apples to Apples. Gifted lunches will be a regular thing and I am planning our next one for the end of February.
Mr. Pernites' 6th grade English students explored energy sources. The initially got into large groups, then they split up based on their interests. They became "experts" on one specific energy source. Once they completed their research, then went back to their home groups to explain their expertise to their group members. Once all that information was shared, students participated in a position/claim on energy. Students researched 3 main topics based on energy here in VA. If time permits, students will be able to discuss these energy sources in depth using Philosophical Chairs.
Students in Mrs. Hackett's Physcial Science class participated in a Sternberg Survey to determine the type of learner they are. Once students decided if they were practical, analytical, or creative learners, they were presented with a task. The task was created with their learning style in mind. Some students created a chart and diagram explaining the Atomic Theory and the scientisits that contributed to it, others created skits, or participated in an interview with the scientists. We were lucky to see some of the skits and interviews today! The students did an excellent job explianing to us how important the scientists were in the development of the Atomic Theory!
Students in Mr. Alfonsi's English class just finished reading the novel Growing Up in Coal Country and were stunned to hear about children working in the coal mines. As a follow up to this novel, students were summoned by the Today show to create a documentary that depicts either child labor back in the nineteenth century or child labor today. Students are in the process of creating a Google slideshow using photos to tell the story of child labor.
Students in Mrs. Hackett's class learned that mistakes are a part of life and they can be very important! Students discussed hobbies and subjects that were difficult for them, and one thing I learned is that our students don't ever give up! Students created new ways to say things when they encountered troubles along the way, whether in school or playing a sport or hobby. We also created our own Mindset Moments collage where students wrote one thing they were struggling with and how they used a Growth Mindset to get through it. Students also examined many different inventions that we use every day like a microwave, chocolate chip cookies, stainless steel, potato chips and we learned they all have one thing in common! They were all created by mistakes! Mistakes help us learn and grow!
We had a full house! It was so fantastic hosting our first 6th grade gifted lunch this school year! We had more students than I've ever had for lunch! I loved it. I am looking forward to our next lunch. Thanks to those students that stopped by! Next lunch will be split up between 2 days so we have more time and space to play games!
Welcome to middle school! I am so excited to be able to work with you all this school year! Please be sure to stop by my classroom, room 130 to meet me, or I will see you soon in your classes or in gifted lunches! :)
Mr. Alfonsi's students just finished reading the novel, Esperazna Rising. To conclude the novel, students participated in a Sternberg Survey to decide how they learn best. Are they practical leaners (do they enjoy taking things apart and fixing them or learning through hands on situations), analytical learners (do they enjoy analyzing characters in a novel or evaluating their own point of view), or creative learners (do they enjoy designing new things or inventing new recipes, words, or games). After taking the survey, students participated in an activity that was tailored to their learning style. The end products were fantastic (and we knew they would be!)
Ms. Houchins' 6th graders explored one step equations in an exciting way today! Students were pre-assessed, then placed in groups according to their readiness. Some students were lucky enough to have a one on one session with Ms. Houchins. Other students participated in a "Sum It Up" activity. The battle was on to see which group could correctly get the sum of 4 problems for all 5 practice sheets! Students not only learned how to solve the problems, but they were also able to provide feedback to their classmates on how to correctly solve the problems.
